IT'S ALL ABOUT ANGLES
NHL replay isn’t perfect.
Just ask Steve Ott who scored a goal but was denied by both a blinded on-ice referee and some seemingly ill-equipped video reviewers away from the ice. Ditto for the Coyotes’ Peter Mueller who had one wiped out against the Stars on Saturday. (These things do tend to even up over the course of a season)
Both of those goal/no goals could have been better reviewed and probably definitively counted if the league would add cameras under the video screen scoreboards at center ice.
I have long believed that a camera or cameras under the “jumbotron” would greatly enhance coverage. This location would place the viewer inside the game rather than presenting the game through mesh screens and distortion inducing glass. Now I feel I underestimated the value these cams could have for video review of cram plays at the net.
Currently the most telling view when determining whether a puck actually crossed the goal line is the overhead position. These are fixed HD cameras located in the rafters of every NHL rink giving a static shot of both goal areas. The problem with this view is that the bottom corners get obscured by the netting bunching and bumper pads as well as the goaltenders contorting body and paraphernalia.
Cameras under the clock, that’s what I say…because goalies aren’t much into full disclosure.

NHL – are you feeling me?
