DYNAMIC DUO?
Venerable hockey rag, The Hockey News, recently asked its contributing writers from all 30 NHL cities to submit the “Dynamic Duo” from the franchises they cover.
Mike Heika is our Stars man. He writes with vicious enthusiasm and scribes for more media outlets than Ann Landers. His employers include THN, the DMN, the FTWST and he’s also my personal patsy on the Taste of Hockey during MY27 games. (Heika gets handsomely compensated for those intellectual beatings.)
Yes he’s a busy boy…maybe a little rundown – or just very, very disturbed. How else to explain why, when pondering the Hockey News’ question, the best he could come up with was “Ralph and Razor”? (And he submitted that! – and they printed it!)
When you flip through the issue and you stumble across the afore mentioned article, that song from Sesame Street – “One of these things is not like the others…” plays in your mind like a backtrack. I mean, please, me and Ralph?! We’re bookended by Hitchcock and G.M. Scott Howson in Columbus, and Datsyuk/Zetterberg in Detroit! (…"can you guess which one is not like the other before I finish the song..”)
Maybe Hull and Jackson, the first ever dual General Managers in professional sports, were just too obvious?
Perhaps he was going for comic effect, or was trying to be ironic? (Irony is huge in 09’)
Whatever the crisis of conventional thinking was, I feel compelled to put the union of Ralph and myself into a more appropriate grouping of “Duos”. They are as follows:
Frodo and Sam
Thelma and Louise
Bert and Ernie
Andre 3000 and Big Boi
Riggs and Murtaugh
Mike and The Mad Dog
Laverne and Shirley
Butch and Sundance
Batman and Robin (The campy version)
Peanut Butter and Jelly
Bo and Luke
Mulder and Scully
Kenny and Dolly
Starsky and Hutch
DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince
Jay and Silent Bob
Bret and Jemaine
Fred and Barney
MJ and Bubbles
Bevis and Butthead
