NUMBER ? IN YOUR PROGRAM, NUMBER 1 IN YOUR HEART

Two months ago Wayne Gretzky retired as Coyotes coach.

Ten years ago the league retired his jersey number, #99, throughout the National Hockey League.

In honor of that (and Lebron James desire to have Jordan’s #23 retired throughout the NBA) I have a precious trivia/bar bet nugget to pass along.

The NHL only allows numbers ranging between 1 and 98 to be worn – although, when is the last time #69 draped a player? Anyway, staying on topic, I’m pretty sure the last #0 and #99 to be worn in the NHL were both worn by New York Rangers. Goalie John Davidson wore #0 and the afore mentioned Great One wore his customary 99 for the last time as a Broadway Blueshirt.

I agree, fascinating.

Only one caveat, Marty Biron wore #00 in Buffalo in 95-96 (But I’m ignoring that for the purpose of making this blog entry more neat and succinct – I have that editorial power)

Mike Fernandez has happy pants about this one.
