GOALIE COACH

The Hockey News editor Jason Kay wrote, appropriately enough, an editorial about the curious fact that goalies gravitate to, and permeate, broadcast booths around the league yet the NHL head coaching fraternity is currently almost void of former masked men.

Maybe hockey needs a "Rooney Rule" for these coaching prospects. Sure, not the same bias, but a bias just the same.

Too much of a stretch?

OK then, how about who currently should be considered, or former goalies who would have made good head guys, potentially...

Five Current Goalies or Goalie Coaches who have Somethin', Somethin'

Tom Barrasso (Carolina)...smart and has demeanor of a head guy

Dwayne Roloson (Tampa Bay)...exposure to Jacques Lemaire has shaped him

Sean Burke (Phoenix)...intelligent, was a leader when he played, vast exposure

Ryan Miller (Buffalo)...bright, cares to expand his scope of views, uses voice

Jim Bedard (Detroit)...exposure to Bowman and Babcock, understands Euros

Goalies Who Didn't Choose the Path, But Would Have Potentially Been Awesome Behind the Bench

Ron Hextall

Mike Richter

Olaf Kolzig

Darren Pang

Ron Tugnutt

Craig Billington

What about me you ask?

Hey, I was just thrilled that my name showed up in The Hockey News again.

The Razorboy loves the post-playing career chosen. There are no, and never have been, any desires or designs regarding coaching or managing. Not that I don't have sterling ideas, a baked-in ability to spot talent, an awe-inspiring work-ethic, an innate feel for a game's flow and direction, and a room-commanding presence. (Haha). The problem is, I'm the only one who sees me in this light!

Speaking of which, I'm needed in make-up. (I think of this coating of Mac #NW25 as my mask. No masks behind the bench. Just anguish and misery, which is too much like many of our playing careers)
