BLAME THE POWERPLAY, IT DESERVES IT
 |
As the Stars head back to Phoenix for the next “they have to win this one to get into the playoffs, unless they lose, at which time the guys who are forced to talk to the media after the game will state the number of games left and that there is still a lot of belief and fight in the group” game, lets hope they remember to update the download of the “game on the line” app for its powerplay. Because since Jamie Benn stunned the Coyotes with that powerplay goal with just 5 seconds to go to win the game, the Stars powerplay has flat out failed when its been needed most.
Four times in the eleven games since that crazy ending in Glendale, the Stars powerplay has had an opportunity, in the dying minutes of regulation, to either tie or win the game and hasn’t.
March 9th vs Calgary
Score tied 3-3, PP with two and a half minutes left in regulation, lost in shootout
March 15 vs San Jose
Trailing 4-3, they get back to back PPs with four minutes to play in regulation, gave up two shorthanded empty-net goals and lose 6-3
March 19th vs Philly
Tied 2-2, Stars went on powerplay for final minute and a half of regulation then the first half a minute of OT, went on to lose in a shootout.
March 26th @ Nashville
Down 3-2 they get awarded a powerplay with exactly two minutes to play in the third period, Preds score an empty netter with seconds to play to win 4-2
Without my full Razordamus powers at work I can still deduce that 4-6 points in the standings, points that could have been secured with clutch scoring from the team’s best five to ten players, have been left on the table. Today that’s the difference between the Stars current 10th place standing and 6th or 7th . And without immediate improvement that table could be painfully bare come April 11th.
