CURRENT EVENTS AND BAD "MUSH" MEMORIES
With all this fervor and vitriol being spewed over "the Chara hit" it got me thinking about the most horrific hit in Dallas Stars history.
How could it be any hit other than the self-inflicted one that left Edmonton's Brian Marchment convulsing on the ice and Guy Carbonneau wildly beckoning medical help from his vantage point in the penalty box at Reunion Arena in the spring of 97'
A villain to Stars fans, Marchment had stumbled as he was shooting a puck in and ran himself head-first into the just opening penalty box door frame.
At the time I thought I was witnessing an on-ice fatality.
Somewhat ironically, his injury ended up being a major rallying point for those 1997 Oilers in their upset of the #1 ranked Stars.
And Marchment himself recovered enough to destroy Joe Nieuwendyk's knee the following season. Just one of multiple Stars players he debilitated with questionable to diabolical hits.
And just why is it that knees don't seem to be getting blown out at the rate they used to, while hits to the head and the accompanying concussions are at an all-time high?
Anyway, Chara was not guilty of trying to maim Max Pacioretty. Chara was guilty of "bigger/stronger" and Pacioretty was the "wrong place, rough ride" guy.
And finally, Canadian airlines, rail services and the Montreal police should probably go back to overcharging, over-stopping, and over-reaching, and allow a full-contact sport that tolerates a level of violence that would get an individual incarcerated on the street to cleanse and discipline itself internally.
Grab a glass of water, five-pepper hot sports opinion there.
