PERCEPTION

Maybe it isn't about how you start but rather how you finish - and where you reside.

The Calgary Flames were on a treadmill to nowhere in the first half of the season. Then, at Christmas, they changed their GM and went on a tear. The Flames finished with 94 points, good for 2nd in the "One Team" Northwest Division - yet, sadly, out of the playoffs with one of the league's highest payrolls.

Flames and Flames fans feel they simply ran out of games.

The Stars were on a rocket ship to the top of their division, and the West, until the All-Star break. Then &@*# happened. The Dallas Stars finished with 95 points, good for dead last in the "NHL's Best" Pacific Division and, with a crushing 82nd game defeat, out of the playoffs with one of the league's lowest payrolls.

Stars and Stars fans feel they inevitably ran out of runway.
